Bhaavya Roy-What does it mean to you as a photographer to capture moments at the Cannes Film Festival?

Image
For   Bhaavya Roy , capturing moments at the Cannes Film Festival goes far beyond simply clicking a shutter—it’s about preserving fragments of cinematic history wrapped in glamour, grace, and raw emotion. As a photographer with a deep appreciation for storytelling, Bhaavya views Cannes as a canvas where fashion, film, and culture collide. “Every frame at Cannes carries a pulse, a presence. It’s not just about who wore what, but  how  they wore it,  why  they were there, and what emotion played on their face when the flash hit,” she explains. Being at Cannes offers  Bhaavya Roy  the opportunity to document not just celebrities, but moments of vulnerability, power, and celebration. Whether it’s the quiet confidence of a rising star on her first red carpet, or the radiant aura of a seasoned icon, Bhaavya’s lens seeks out the authenticity behind the glamour. She often describes it as “a dance between chaos and poise.” For her, each photo is a story...

Bhaavya Roy-How do you handle models who are nervous or inexperienced in front of the camera?

Image
Bhaavya Roy : One of the most important aspects of my work as a photographer is creating a safe, empowering space for the model—especially when they’re new or feeling nervous. Over the years, I’ve come to realize that technical skills are only half the equation. The other half is emotional intelligence. When a model steps onto a set, particularly if it’s their first time, there’s a natural vulnerability in front of the camera. I never take that lightly. The first thing I do is take a few minutes to connect on a human level before I even lift the camera. I introduce myself, talk about the vision for the shoot, and encourage them to share anything they might be feeling anxious about. I want them to feel seen—not just as a subject, but as a collaborator. Communication is everything. I let them know that we’re in this together and that there’s no pressure to “perform.” During the shoot, I guide them gently. I’ll demonstrate poses, suggest movements, and sometimes play music to light...

Bhaavya Roy-What’s the biggest difference between photographing models versus actors or public figures?

Image
The biggest difference between photographing professional models and actors or public figures lies in their training, intent, and emotional language in front of the camera. As a photographer, I— Bhaavya Roy —have had the privilege of working with both, and I’ve come to understand that each group brings a distinct energy to the lens. Models are often highly trained in movement, angles, and poses. Their bodies become tools of expression. They understand lighting, posture, and fashion dynamics almost instinctively. When I shoot with a model, it often becomes a collaborative dance of visual precision—we’re building shapes, moods, and a clear aesthetic narrative. It’s about detail and control. On the other hand, actors or public figures, especially those from the film industry, approach the camera with a more emotive mindset. They’re storytellers. Their expressions come from an internal place. When I photograph an actor, I don’t just direct poses—I direct emotions. I might as...

Bhaavya Roy-Essential Photographic Techniques

Image
  1. Master the Exposure Triangle Aperture (f-stop): Controls depth of field. Wide aperture (f/1.8) = blurry background. Narrow aperture (f/11+) = more in focus. Shutter Speed: Controls motion blur. Fast (1/1000s) for action; slow (1/10s) for long exposure/light trails. ISO: Controls sensor sensitivity. Low ISO = clean image; high ISO = more noise. 2. Use the Rule of Thirds Place your subject off-center at the intersections of an imaginary 3x3 grid for balanced and dynamic composition. 3. Understand and Use Light Golden Hour: Shoot during sunrise or sunset for warm, soft light. Blue Hour: Just after sunset or before sunrise, ideal for moody landscapes and cityscapes. Backlighting/Sidelighting: Adds depth and drama. 4. Control Depth of Field Use shallow depth of field (low f-number) for portraits to blur the background. Use deep depth of field (high f-number) for landscapes to keep everything sharp. 5. Long Exposure Photography Great...

Bhaavya Roy-Do you prefer natural landscapes or urban settings for your outdoor shoots?

Image
Bhaavya Roy : "Honestly, I love both — but for very different reasons. Each offers its own language, its own energy. When I shoot in natural landscapes , there’s a kind of serenity that allows for introspective, poetic imagery. Nature gives you silence, space, and a rhythm that lets you slow down and really connect with the subject. The way wind plays with fabric, how light filters through leaves, or how vast open skies make a subject look powerful yet vulnerable — it creates an emotional depth that’s very hard to replicate in a controlled environment. On the other hand, urban settings speak to my love for raw realism, contrast, and story. Cities have layers — architectural textures, human energy, sounds, and imperfections. I’m fascinated by the juxtaposition of a couture dress against an old, weathered wall or how a celebrity in high fashion stands out dramatically amidst traffic and billboards. There’s an edge to urban photography that challenges you to find beauty in chaos...

Do you plan your shoots or prefer spontaneous moments? – Bhaavya Roy

Image
For Bhaavya Roy, the creative process is a delicate balance between thoughtful planning and the magic of spontaneity. She believes that while structure gives a shoot direction, it’s often the unplanned moments that breathe life into her images. Bhaavya approaches every project with a strong conceptual foundation — whether it's a fashion editorial, a celebrity portrait, or a personal photo essay, she begins by visualizing the mood, tone, and story she wants to convey. Planning, for her, includes moodboarding, location scouting, understanding her subject’s personality, and designing a visual flow that aligns with the narrative she’s building. She collaborates closely with stylists, makeup artists, and creative directors to ensure that every element contributes meaningfully to the final image. However, she’s also quick to adapt when something unexpected unfolds on set — a candid laugh, a gust of wind, or a change in lighting — and she embraces those instances fully. Bhaavya Roy of...

"What was your first photo shoot with a celebrity like, and how did it shape your approach to working with public figures?"

Image
Bhaavya Roy : My first celebrity photo shoot was with a rising Bollywood actor for a magazine cover. I remember being both excited and incredibly nervous. There’s a certain energy that celebrities carry — a mix of charm, pressure, and expectation. I realized early on that technical skill alone isn’t enough; building rapport and creating a sense of ease on set is just as important. That first shoot taught me the importance of reading a person’s vibe quickly, adapting to their comfort level, and guiding them subtly without making them feel directed. Since then, my approach has always been about collaboration — making the shoot feel like a creative exchange, not just a job. READ MORE

Bhaavya Roy-What are the biggest technical challenges you face during high-pressure Bollywood shoots?

Image
Bhaavya Roy : "High-pressure Bollywood shoots come with their own unique rhythm—fast, demanding, and with very little room for error. One of the biggest technical challenges I face is managing time constraints . Celebrities often have packed schedules, which means I sometimes have just 10–15 minutes to capture an entire editorial concept. That’s where preparation and precision become non-negotiable. Another major factor is lighting control , especially on location. Whether I’m shooting in harsh sunlight, a crowded film set, or an unpredictable outdoor space, I have to adapt instantly. I carry a modular lighting setup—portable strobes, reflectors, and continuous lights—so I can adjust based on the conditions, but even then, speed and instinct matter. There’s also the challenge of tethered shooting and real-time client feedback . On commercial or magazine shoots, there are often 10 people looking at the screen—stylists, managers, brand reps—all with opinions. Balancing technica...
